The Attack of Swollen Gums

Bleeding or swollen gums is a serious condition and should not be allowed to persist. The most common cause of swollen gums is infection of the gingiva, caused by plaque, which is a thin covering of food and bacteria on the tooth surface. While bleeding or swollen gums is an early indicator of gingivitis, or swollen gums, they may sometimes occur from vigorous brushing.

Poor nutrition and hormones may be the culprit of having swollen gums that if left untreated may lead into gingivitis. Preventing swollen gums is the first step in preventing gingivitis and gum diseases. The best way to prevent swollen gums is to prevent the bacteria that keeps on growing in the mouth, brushing and flossing regularly is important in this prevention process.

Combination of proper oral hygiene and proper nutrition are the important ways in preventing swollen gums, gingivitis and gum disease.
